The Sunshine State Conference is pleased to announce that Florida Blue, formerly Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, has agreed to become the title sponsor for all SSC championship events.
The SSC and Florida Blue have signed an agreement for the remainder of 2012, which will recognize the company as the title sponsor for the conference’s three upcoming spring championships, as well as the fall championships.
“Florida Blue has been a great partner for the Sunshine State Conference with our basketball tournament,” SSC Commissioner Jay Jones said. “We are very excited to expand that relationship and have them represent us as the title sponsor across all of our sports. Florida Blue and the Sunshine State Conference both take great pride in their involvement with communities throughout the state of Florida. For that reason, a relationship between the two entities makes perfect sense.”
The SSC sponsors championships for seven sports annually. Fall championships are conducted in soccer and cross country. The winter season features championships for basketball and swimming. Golf, tennis, and rowing comprise the spring championship schedule. In all sports except rowing, both men’s and women’s championships are conducted. In rowing, only women’s teams compete, as the NCAA only sponsors women’s rowing as an official sport.
Sunshine State Conference membership is comprised of nine private colleges and universities located throughout the state of Florida with over 2,000 student-athletes, 70,000 students and an alumni base of almost 400,000. Its members have won 76 NCAA Division II national titles in 10 different sports, and it is the No. 1-ranked conference in Division II Academic Success Rate. Former Sunshine State Conference student-athletes include Lou Piniella, Rocco Mediate, Tim Wakefield, Matt Joyce, Brett Tomko, Lee Janzen, Jeff Leonard, and Tino Martinez.
Formerly known as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Florida Blue has been in business in the state for almost 70 years. The company provides health coverage for nearly one in three Floridians. More than 42,000 residents visited Florida Blue centers in 2011.
