Rain Stymies Quarterfinals of Florida Blue SSC Tennis Championships
Rain forced the postponement of all four women's quarterfinal matches on Thursday at the 2012 Florida Blue SSC Tennis Championships. The three men's semifinals were able to skirt around the wet conditions, with Barry, Rollins, and Saint Leo posting wins.
Play will resume at 8 a.m. on Friday morning with women's quarterfinals, as well as semifinals and back draw matches at the Beerman Tennis Center and on the campus of Florida Southern College. An updated schedule of matches, which reflects changes forced by Thursday's rain, appears on the Tennis Championship Central page of the SSC website.
Fortunately, all three men's quarterfinal matches were squeezed in despite the inclement weather.
No. 4 Saint Leo downed No. 5 Florida Southern 5-2 to chalk the first result of the tournament. The Lions trailed the Moccasins 2-1 coming out of doubles play. FSC's Benoit Paradis and Emanuel Lueber defeated Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio and Antonine Raffaelli 8-5 in the #2 slot. The Mocs' Nathan Leavitt and Vladimir Barabash also defeated Aloua Adjenak and Jake Fleisher 8-5 in the third flight. Saint Leo picked up a point in the #1 position compliments of an 8-5 win by Matt Nicholson-Lewis and Victor Lozier over Ivan Marevic and Jorge Gutierrez.
In singles play, Adjenak came from behind to beat Paradis at #1 by a tally of 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. Nicholson-Lewis handled Lueber 6-0, 6-4 in the second flight. Gonzalez-Tarrio rebounded with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Leavitt in the fourth slot, while Raffaelli defeated Jorge Gutierrez 6-1, 6-1 at #6.
In the second match completed on the day, No. 3 Barry rolled past No. 6 Florida Tech 5-0. In doubles, BU's Marco Mokrzycki and Leo Vivas dispatched Nicolas Clerc and Michael Schmidt 8-4 in the top spot. At #2, Daniel Schmidt and Fabian Groetsch cruised past James McLane and Daniel Armellino 8-1. The third flight went to Romain Costamagna and Ollie Lemaitre, who downed Riley Lorenz and Barry Dylewski 8-4.
Lemaitre also garned a point in singles action, beating Armellino 6-1, 6-0 in the fifth position. Kevin Sielmann blanked Lorenz 6-0, 6-0 for the other singles point at #6.
In the last match to overcome rain delays, No. 2 Rollins swept No. 7 Eckerd 5-0. The top-flight duo of Lucas Jovita and Jason Alabaster turned back Dylan Randazzo and Stephen Felman 8-1. At #2, Malte Christesen and Constantin Sturdza staved off Connor Ohlsen and Madison Durley 8-5. The third slot went Jeff Morris and Ari Davis, who defeated Brian Hill and Ben Levy 8-5.
Morris also notched a point in single competiton with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hill in the second flight. Alabaster overpowered Jesus Silva 6-0, 6-0 in the sixth slot.
In Friday's semifinals, Saint Leo will take on top-seeded Lynn at 11 a.m. at the Beerman Tennis Center. Barry and Rollins will face off at 10 a.m. at the Beerman complex.
Also on Friday, Florida Tech and Eckerd will meet in a back draw match at noon at the Beerman Tennis Center.
