2012 All-SSC Men's Tennis Team Announced
A total of 19 student-athletes were selected to the 2012 All-Sunshine State Conference Men’s Tennis Team. Rollins’ Lucas Jovita was named Player of the Year. Barry’s Fabian Groetsch was recognized as Freshman of the Year, and Buccaneer skipper George Samuel was selected Coach of the Year.
Earning All-SSC First Team singles honors with Jovita were: Aloua Adjenak (Saint Leo), Nicolas Clerc (Florida Tech), Marco Mokrzycki (Barry), Jeff Morris (Rollins), and Willi Wolfer (Lynn).
Picking up All-SSC First Team doubles accolades were: Wolfer and Vlad Cirla (Lynn), Jovita and Jason Alabaster (Rollins), and Matt Nicholson-Lewis and Victor Lozier (Saint Leo).
Chosen all-conference second team in singles with Groetsch, Cirla, Lozier, and Nicholson-Lewis were: Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio (Saint Leo) and Luca Pavanelli (Lynn).
Named to the All-SSC Second team in doubles were: Adjenak and Jake Fleischer (Saint Leo), Clerc and Jorge Abarca Montero (Florida Tech), Mokrzycki and Leo Vivas (Barry), and Benoit Paradis and Emanuel Lueber (Florida Southern).
Rollins’ Malte Christesen received honorable mention for singles.
Voting for the All-SSC Men’s Tennis Team was conducted among the league’s men’s tennis coaches and sports information directors.
A native of Brasilia, Brazil, Jovita rolled to a 19-1 record in the #1 singles position this spring. He was a perfect 6-0 in conference matches. Jovita dispatched five nationally-ranked opponents and is, himself, the No. 2-ranked player in the ITA’s Division II singles rankings. He also combined with Jason Alabaster for a 15-4 mark in the top doubles flight.
Making his way to Barry from Nuremberg, Germany, Groetsch posted a 16-6 singles record in his debut season. He played in every flight from #1 to #5 and went 5-1 against conference opponents. Ranked No. 27 in the ITA singles rankings, Groetsch downed five nationally-ranked opponents this spring. He compiled a 13-8 doubles record, playing primarily with Daniel Schmidt.
Samuel wins his fifth consecutive SSC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year title. In total, he has garnered the award 12 times. Samuel led his Buccaneers to their fourth SSC championship in five years. The squad carries a 21-5 overall record is ranked No. 3 in the ITA Division II national rankings. Samuel’s Bucs posted 15 wins over nationally-ranked opponents this spring.
