A number of SSC golfers were among the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) 2011-12 NCAA Division II award winners, with Nova Southeastern's Abbey Gittings being honored as the Player of the Year, and Liliana Cammisa being selected Freshman of the Year.
Gittings and Cammisa were joined on the NGCA DII First-Team All-American squad by teammate Daniela Ortiz. Florida Southern's M.J. Audette was named a second-team All-American. Barry's Taylor Babcock, Lynn's Irene Calvo, and Southern's Megan Kiley received honorable mention.
The NGCA also announced its All-South Region team. NSU's Gittings and Cammisa, FSC's Audette, and Barry's Nancy Vegara were recognized on that list.
Lynn's Daniel Randolph was awarded as the Division II Eaton Golf Pride NGCA Regional Coach of the Year.
Gittings, the top-ranked player in the nation, becomes the third women’s golfer in NSU history to win a national title as an individual, winning the 2012 Championship last Saturday by two strokes. Already honored as the Sunshine State Conference Player of the year, Gittings collected 10 top-10 finishes this season and three individual victories. Gittings has now been named an All-America First-Team member two years in a row.
A member of the NSU women’s golf team has been named the PING/NGCA Player of the Year for six straight years, as former Shark Sandra Changkija won the previous four honors after Maria Garcia-Austt won the school's first award.
No. 3 Cammisa posted a third-place finish at the 2012 Championship, finishing three strokes back of Gittings. Previously selected to the All-SSC First-Team, Cammisa topped the leaderboard at the SSC Championship by three strokes and then went on to win the NCAA Super Regional II by four strokes. She racked up seven top-five finishes this season.
