Four SSC volleyball teams were among those who received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for 2011-12. Barry, Florida Southern, Lynn, and Rollins were all recognized.
In total, a record 535 teams earned the distinction, with nearly 70 NCAA Division II squads making the list.
The award, which began during the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that display academic excellence by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Since its inception, the number of programs earning the Team Academic Award has risen 760 percent. In the past decade, the number of honorees has increased by 200 percent.
This year's 69 DII honorees breaks the division's previous record of 57 from a year ago.
