The University of Tampa women’s team and the Florida Southern College men’s team were crowned champions of the 2007 Sunshine State Conference Cross Country Championships, hosted Saturday by Saint Leo University at The Abbey Tavern Golf Course.
In the women’s 6K race, Florida Southern finished second, while Nova Southeastern placed third. Florida Tech finished fourth, followed by Rollins (5th) and Saint Leo (6th).
In the men’s 8K event, Tampa placed second, followed by Nova Southeastern (3rd) and Florida Tech (4th). Saint Leo finished fifth, while Rollins was sixth.
Women’s champion Tampa claimed four of the top five individual times. Laura Woznicki turned in the top performance, crossing the line with a time of 21:39. Jessica Forrester finished second with a time of 22:22. Paige Williams placed fourth (23:19), with teammate Alysha Duffy right on her heels in fifth (23:19). Julia Vola placed in the top 10 for the Spartans, posting a time of 23:21.
Runner-up Florida Southern placed three runners in the top 10, led by Carolyne Kwambai, who finished third with a time of 22:55. Danielle Shimer placed 8th (23:39), while Kelsey Dunn was 9th (23:44).
Men’s champion Florida Southern placed all five of its runners in the top 10 and logged three of the top five times. Luke Beevor registered the best time, crossing the line first in 26:21. Lief Thomason was fourth (26:42), and Ben Martucci was fifth (26:43). Scott Mackley (6th – 26:48) and William Koeppel (10th – 27:14) also posted top-10 times.
Runner-up Tampa had three runners in the top 10, led by Tony Nicolosi’s second-place time (26:29), and David Forry’s third-place finish (26:36). Chris Catanach was eighth with a time of 27:03.
The SSC Championship was the 11th straight title for Florida Southern’s men’s team. The Tampa women’s team wins the conference championship for the fifth time in six years.
