Pocza wins SSC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. A senior from Gyor, Hungary, Pocza rolled to a perfect 12-0 overall record this spring. Playing in the top singles flight, she notched six wins over nationally-ranked opponents. Among those victories was a 6-2, 6-4 victory over No. 7 Magdalena Ekert of Lynn. She also knocked off No. 5 Alida Mueller-Wehlau 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 in Barry’s final regular-season match, an upset over No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic. Pocza was also solid in doubles play, teaming with Angie Werschel for a 13-3 record in the top doubles position.
Goge compiled an impressive 19-1 record in her collegiate debut, playing primarily at #2 singles. Hailing from Cesis, Latvia, she tallied three victories over nationally-ranked opponents. Included among those performances was a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 17 Margaret Junker of Rollins. In doubles play, she joined Agnese Rozite for a 14-8 mark in the #1 slot.
Kigel wins his second straight SSC Coach of the Year award after leading the Buccaneers to consecutive conference titles. Barry has rolled to a 20-1 record, avenging its lone loss of the season by taking down league rival Lynn 5-2 in the SSC Championship final. Ranked No. 4 in the ITA Division II rankings, the Bucs were tabbed the No. 1 seed for the upcoming DII South Regional and will serve as one of two hosts for the first two rounds of NCAA tournament action.
Voting for the all-conference team was conducted among the league’s women’s tennis coaches and sports information directors.
