Florida Tech men’s golfer Corey Menter has been awarded the 2011 Sunshine State Conference Male Sportsmanship Award.
A senior, Menter was a regular in the Tech men’s golf lineup. Nevertheless, prior to the SSC Championship, he was edged out by a teammate in his squad’s final day of team qualifying. As such, Menter was not included as one of the Panthers’ five golfers to compete in the conference championship.
Although he was distraught and disappointed not to make the cut for what could have been the last tournament of his collegiate career, Menter accepted the fact that his game wasn’t at its best when the decision was made. Despite not qualifying, he traveled to Boca Raton to support his teammates who competed in the event.
As it turned out, the native of Jacksonville, Fla., got a second chance to represent his institution when the Panthers were selected to participate in the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional. He not only qualified to compete as one of Tech’s five golfers, but he was his team’s top performer at the regional, leading the Panthers within three shots of the NCAA Division II Championship.
Menter’s coach, Chris Saltmarsh, and teammates noted that he approaches the game of golf with honesty, integrity, and responsibility. Always one to do the right thing regardless if anyone was watching, he was the first to call a penalty on himself or give his correct score, even if someone else scored him lower because they missed one of his strokes.
