Former FSC Player Matt Joyce Readies for MLB All-Star Game
Former Florida Southern Moccasin Matt Joyce, who has been one of the top hitters in the American League this season, is preparing to represent the Tampa Bay Rays as a member of the American League All-Star Team on Tuesday in Phoenix.
Joyce, who is hitting .290 with 12 home runs and 41 RBI, was selected by the players as a reserve for the AL team. Heading into the All-Star break, Joyce had also tallied 20 doubles and 45 runs. He has not made an error this season and was the AL's leading hitter for several weeks earlier in June.
The former Moccasin right fielder is Florida Southern's second Major League All-Star. The first was relief pitcher John Hudek, who made the National League All-Star team as a rookie with thde Houston Astros in 1994.
Joyce played at Florida Southern from 2003-05, hitting .306 with 40 doubles, seven triples, 22 home runs and 121 RBI. He helped the Moccasins win the NCAA Division II national championship in 2005.
