Three SSC tennis players will be among those who compete at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championship Oct. 13-16 in Mobile, Ala. Lynn's Ioana Ivan and Sabine Krause and Rollins' Lucas Jovita punched their tickets with wins at the ITA South Region Championship.
In men's championship action, second-seed Jovita defeated top seed Willi Wolfer of Lynn to capture the ITA South Region Men's Singles Championship on Sept. 25.
A transfer from the University of South Florida, Jovita is seeking to become the first Tar to win the national singles title since Pat Emmet in 1988.
Jovita started the four-day event, hosted by Valdosta State, with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ben Kendall (Lynn), and then advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing of Jake Fleischer (Saint Leo). He beat ninth-seeded Christian Hansen (Valdosta St.) 7-6(5), ret. before downing eighth-seed Andrey Pozhidaev 6-1, 6-2 (West Fla.) in the quarterfinals. Jovita then matched-up with 11th-seeded Marco Mokrzycki of Barry and scored a 6-0, 6-4 win to earn a spot in the finals.
In the women's regional event, Ivan and Krause won the ITA South Region Women's Doubles Championship, while Ivan also took the singles title on Sunday.
Ivan played Barry’s Mona Mansour in the singles final and tallied a 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 win to advance to the National Small College Championship.
In the doubles draw, Ivan and Krause dropped Katarina Huba and Kristina Huba from Florida Tech 6-2, 6-2.
