Saint Leo's Brittany Yates and Barry's Brianna Smith have been named Sunshine State Conference Softball Players of the Week.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK -- Saint Leo senior C Brittany Yates (Riverview, Fla.) batted .562 with eight RBI and five runs as the Lions went 3-2 in the Saint Leo Spring Invitational. Yates hit safely in all five games and tallied multiple hits in three contests. She drove in at least one run in every game and batted in multiple runners three times. She recorded a double and a home run and was a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts. For the week, Yates recorded a .812 slugging percentage and a .611 on-base percentage. She was flawless behind the plate, posting 23 put-outs.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK -- Barry senior Brianna Smith (Norco, Calif.) picked up a save and a complete-game shutout in two Buccaneer wins at Alabama-Huntsville’s Charger Chillout. She secured a 2-0 win over Augusta State by allowing no hits or walks in three relief innings. She struck out three. Her shutout came in a 1-0 victory over No. 3 North Georgia. Pitching seven innings, Smith scattered five hits with one walk. She fanned eight batters.
