Maggard, Martinez, Ferguson, and Hernandez Receive Baseball Honors
Florida Southern's Zach Maggard and Nova Southeastern's J.D. Martinez have been named Sunshine State Conference Baseball Players of the Week for the period ending April 27. Tampa's Kevin Ferguson and Barry's Bobby Hernandez were tabbed SSC Pitchers of the Week.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK -- Florida Southern freshman catcher Zach Maggard (Dade City, Fla.) played a big part in the Moccasins’ 3-1 weekly mark, which included a key SSC series victory over No. 29 Lynn. Maggard batted .643 with five runs and four RBI, tallying multiple hits in all four contests. In an 11-6 series opening win over Lynn, he went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs. In the Mocs’ 7-4 victory in game two, he was 2-for-3 with another homer and two runs. For the week, Maggard posted a 1.143 slugging percentage, a .688 OBP, and a .967 fielding percentage.
|PLAYER OF THE WEEK -- Nova Southeastern sophomore left fielder J.D. Martinez (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) batted .529 with six runs and nine RBI, as the Sharks went 2-2 with a conference series win at Barry. Martinez hit safely in every game. In a 20-7 game two win over the Bucs, he went 4-for-5 with a homer, a double, five RBI and three runs. In a 12-2 win in the finale, he was 3-for-5 with two home runs, four RBI, and three runs. Martinez completed the week with a 1.118 slugging percentage, a .579 OBP, and a 1.000 fielding percentage.|
|PITCHER OF THE WEEK -- Tampa senior Kevin Ferguson (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) led the No. 3 Spartans to a 16-2 win at Rollins, allowing one earned run on six hits and one walk over 7.0 innings. He struck out a career-high 11 batters in the contest.|
PITCHER OF THE WEEK -- In the opening game of the series, Barry junior Bobby Hernandez (Key West, Fla.) posted a complete-game shutout against a Nova Southeastern offense that churned out 32 runs the rest of the way. Hernandez allowed six hits and three walks with five strikeouts en route to a 9-0 Buccaneer victory.
