Running on a snow-covered course, the Florida Southern men and Tampa women braved cold conditions to compete in the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship on Saturday in Louisville, Ky. The Moccasins placed 23rd in the 10K race, while the Spartans finished 15th in the 6K event.
Adams State (Colo.) won the 24-team men's meet with a total of 57 points.
Ben Martucci was the Moccasins' top finisher, placing 128th in a time of 33:40.5. Eric Larson was 130th in 33:42.7. Drew Martucci was 140th in 34:03.0, followed by Zack Kovacik in 145th in 34:09.4 and Jason Patchett-Gillis in 149th in 34:13.6. Rounding out the FSC contingent were Chris Yanichko in 160th with a time of 34:33.7 and David Tomchinsky in 172nd in 35:25.7.
Two other SSC representatives ran in the men's race as individiuals. Tampa's Tony Nicolosi finished 95th in the 10K with a 32:40.9 showing for the Spartans. Nova Southeastern's Agustin Rey turned in a mark of 33:25.0 to place 118th.
Michael Crouch of Queens (N.C.) was the individual winner in 30:43.2.
Grand Valley State won the women's title with 66 points.
Heather Nicolosi led the Spartans with a 34th place finish. The junior from Seminole, Fla., became an All-American after finishing with a time of 22:14 in the women’s 6K.
Lindsay Edwards (66th, 22:52.1), Kelly Hagan (124th, 23:53.6), Kaia Hampton (131st, 23:58.7), Katie O’Brien (139th, 24:14), Iolani Scanlon (169th, 25:08.4) and Chanelle Cox (171st, 25:14.7) were also part of UT’s championship competition contingent.
Shippensburg's Neely Spence won the women's race with a time of 20:41.2.
