BACK-TO-BACK NATIONAL CHAMPIONS: No. 1 Barry Defeats No. 6 Nova Southeastern for NCAA Men’s Golf Title
ALLENDALE, Mich. (Men’s Golf) – The nations’ No. 1 golf team, the Barry Buccaneers, defeated No. 6 Nova Southeastern 3-1-1 in the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship match-play finals to earn its second-straight national title.
In 2007, Barry won a national title at the Meadows in Allendale, Mich., the last time the course hosted the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship. The Buccaneers now have three national championships in men’s golf.
Nova Southeastern finishes runner-up for the first time in its men’s golf program history. The Sharks, however, won the national title in 2012.
The SSC now has a total of 20 national titles in men’s golf and 13 national runner-ups. It is the third-straight national title and second-straight national runner-up finish for the conference.
Barry earned the first point with Scott Smyers defeating Hunter O’Mahony by three strokes. Smyers shot a +4, while O’Mahony finished with a +7.
The Buccaneers’ Jared Dalga defeats the Sharks’ Mitch Farrer by three strokes. Dalga shot even par, while Farrer shot a +3.
Berry Jole earned Barry’s third and clinching point after defeating Nova Southeastern’s Oscar Lengden by two strokes. Jole finished +2, while Lengden shot a +4.
The Sharks’ Santiago Gomez and the Buccaneers’ Mario Beltran finished even both shooting a +2 in the match-play finals.
Nova Southeastern’s Ricardo Celia concluded the finals with a one-stroke win over Barry’s Adam Svensson. Celia finished even par, while Svensson finished +1.
It is the third team national championship for the SSC during the spring season. Barry won the women’s tennis national title, and Lynn won its second-straight women’s golf title on May 17. Barry’s women’s golf team finished national runner-up.
Florida Southern’s Tim Crouch won his second-straight men’s golf individual national title on Wednesday, while Lynn’s Louise Manalo won the women’s golf individual national title last Saturday.
Schools in the SSC have now claimed 87 Division II National Titles and have also collected 73 national runner-up trophies.
