FSC Women, Barry Men Claim 2010-11 SSC Mayors’ Cup Trophies
Florida Southern claimed the women’s division of the 2010-11 Sunshine State Conference Mayors’ Cup all-sports trophy, while Barry won the men’s division.
First presented following the 1986-87 academic year, the award has traditionally been sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC member institutions are located.
In the women’s division, points are awarded based on final conference standing in cross country, volleyball, soccer, basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, rowing, and softball. In the men’s division, points are awarded for final standing in cross country, soccer, basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, and baseball. In each category, points awarded depend on the number of conference schools that sponsor the particular sport. In both divisions, points in soccer and basketball are awarded based on regular-season finish, while tennis points are based on finish in the SSC tournament.
Florida Southern’s victory marks their 11th overall in the women’s division. The Moccasins last claimed the award in 2006-07.
FSC earned 47.5 points to take the women’s division crown. The Moccasins’ victory was buoyed by an SSC championship in women’s basketball. FSC squads also placed second in swimming and golf and tied for second in volleyball. The women’s soccer team tied for third in the final standings, while tennis and softball logged fourth-place finishes. Cross country placed fifth at the league meet.
Tampa placed second in the women’s division standings, accumulating 44.5 points. Nova Southeastern and Rollins tied for third with 42.0 points. Florida Tech ranked fifth with 34.5 points, just ahead of Barry, which landed in the sixth slot with 32.0 points. With 27.5 points, Lynn edged Saint Leo (25.5) for seventh.
