Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week | March 7 - 13, 2016
Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 7-13, 2016. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Baseball
Frank Grandinette / Lynn University / Jr. / RHP / Orlando, Fla.
Grandinette earns his second SSC Pitcher of the Week honor following a complete game win over a conference opponent. Grandinette tossed nine innings in Lynn’s, 5-4, victory at Nova Southeastern in first complete game performance for the program this year. The Orlando native struck out nine batters on 149 pitches (103 strikes) and walked one hitter. Grandinette gave up 13 hits and four earned runs in the win. At the plate, he went 2-4 and scored once. Grandinette moves to 4-0 on the season, while Lynn is 14-8 overall and 6-0 in SSC Play.
Troy Sieber / Saint Leo University / Jr. / 1B / Salem, N.J.
In a five-game slate last week, Sieber batted .737, had an on base percentage of .800, slugged 1.474, and extended his consecutive hit streak to 16-games to earn SSC Player of the Week. In non-conference play, the Salem, New Jersey native went 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs against Mansfield and 4-for-4 with three RBI’s against Upper Iowa. During a three-game series against No. 1 Tampa, Sieber batted 7-for-12 with four RBIs and three runs scored. His top game against the Spartans was the final game of the series. Sieber drove in three runs off two hits and two walks in a losing effort. For the week, Sieber batted 14-for-19, recorded 11 RBIs, scored eight times, drew six walks, hit three home runs, and stole two bases. Seven of Sieber’s 14 hits were for extra bases. He now ranks fifth in the Sunshine State Conference in batting, and is the SSC leader in slugging percentage. The Lions are 12-10 overall, 0-3 in SSC play.
Softball
Alyssa Bache / University of Tampa / Sr. / Pitcher / Clearwater, Fla.
Bache earns her second SSC Pitcher of the Week after leading Tampa to three victories last week. The Clearwater, Florida native threw seven innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out nine and walking none in a, 3-2, victory over Ferris State. Bache pitched two and two thirds innings of relief in the second game against Ferris State, 3-2, giving up no runs on two hits while striking out five. In the first game of the three game set with Embry-Riddle, the senior pitched 7.2 innings giving up one run on three hits, walking three and striking out 13 Eagles as the Spartans claimed a nine inning, 2-1, victory. In Tampa’s only loss last week, 5-4 (15 innings), Bache threw an inning giving up two runs on two hits. Tampa is 11-8 overall and 4-5 in SSC play.
Dajia Jones / Nova Southeastern University / Jr. / DP/ Jacksonville, Fla.
Jones is awarded SSC Player of the Week honors following her nine hits on the weekend during the Spring Games Tournament where the Sharks had six games in three days and split the weekend with three wins and three losses. Jones’ best preformance was during the final game of the weekend where she went 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs and scored a run as the Sharks defeated St. Thomas Aquinas, 6-1. The Jacksonville, Florida native had two other multi-hit games. The first was in a loss to Ferris State, 5-3, where she went 2-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Jones also collected two hits in the 3-2 victory over Bentley, where she went 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. In 19 at bats Jones had only three strikeouts. Nova Southeastern is 8-18 overall and 1-8 in SSC play.
Golf
Niclas Weiland / Barry University / Fr. / Linkoping, Sweden
Weiland claims this week's SSC Men's Golfer of the Week honor after winning the Florida Tech Panther Invitational. The Buccaneer freshman shot 69 in the final round to win by a single stroke. Weiland shot 1-over (74-74-69) for tournament, which was his first collegiate victory. Barry finished second out of 14 teams.
Tilda Larsson / Barry University / Fr. / Emmaboda, Sweden
Larsson is this week's SSC Women's Golfer of the Week after winning her second straight tournament. The Buccaneer freshman was victorious at the Division I Lady Eagle Invitational hosted by Southern Mississippi. She shot 3-over (73-73-73) and helped the No. 3 Buccaneers win tournament by 15 strokes. The tournament win was Barry's third on the season.
Tennis
Alberto Barroso-Campos / Saint Leo University / Fr. / Montijo, Spain
Barroso-Campos is named SSC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the third time this season as he went 8-0 over the week. Barroso-Campos dominated at both the No. 1 singles and doubles spot. Against Ferris State, he won 6-1, 6-1, in singles, and 9-7 pairing with Alex Thieler to take down Ferris, 9-0. Against No. 8 Concordia (N.Y), #3 Barroso-Campos topped #9 individual Jui Mao, 6-1, 6-4. In doubles, again with Thieler as the #7 pairing, they topped the #1 doubles team, 8-6. The Lions hosted the No. 2 NAIA team in Auburn-Montgomery, winning 7-2. Again, Barroso-Campos won both his singles and doubles matches. He won No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3, and with Theiler, the win came in the No. 1 doubles as well, going 8-4. In the final match of the week, the Lions took down #20 North Georgia, 7-2. Barroso-Campos took a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No.1 Singles match. And again with Theiler, the duo won 8-3. The Lions are now 9-0.
Isabella Robbiani / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Asuncion, Paraguay
Robbiani is this week’s SSC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after helping the Lions take down top ranked opponents. Robbiani went 4-0 over the week, winning both 2-0 in doubles and singles. She topped Ferris State's No. 2, 6-2, 6-0, and paired with Kati Zaatini to win in doubles, 8-4. Robbiani took the No. 1 spot win in a 6-3 win over Northeastern State. She took the win 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. She paired with Ana Wagner to take the 8-4 win over Northeastern State's No. 1 pairing.
Men's Lacrosse
Jake Gilmour / Saint Leo University / So. / Attack / Pickering, Ontario, Canada
Gilmour earns SSC Offensive Player of the Week following his nine assists and scored five goals for the Lions this week. In a 13-8 win over Coker, Gilmour scored four goals and added one assist for a team-high five points. In a 22-2 win over Lees-McRae, Gilmour dished out a school record eight assists, seven of which came consecutively, and he added a goal of his own for nine points in the game. After four straight wins Saint Leo holds an overall record of 5-1.
Addison Abramson / Florida Tech / Fr. / LSM / Reisterstown, Md.
Abramson takes SSC Defensive Player of the Week honors after Florida Tech’s 2-1 record on the road this week. The freshman picked a team-high five ground balls as the Panthers came from five down in the fourth quarter to beat Wheeling Jesuit in overtime 12-11 on Monday. Abramson then recorded two caused turnovers in the Panthers 11-7 loss to No. 4 Seton Hill on Wednesday. In the final game of the road trip, an 11-7 victory over Alderson Broaddus, Abramson collected three ground balls and three caused turnovers to help FIT improve to 5-2 on the season.
Alex Petsos / Rollins College / Sr. / Midfielder / Allen, Texas
Petsos earned SSC Specialist of the Week following a .909 win percentage in two games of action as the Tars went 1-2 on the week. Petsos won 12-of-14 faceoffs and amassed 12 ground balls in the Tars' 21-3 victory over Lees-McRae. The Texan was a perfect 8-of-8 in the Tars hard fought 13-10 loss to No. 19 Belmont Abbey. Petsos added six ground balls against the Crusaders. Rollins is now 4-3 overall.
Women's Lacrosse
Tyler Thomas / Rollins College / Sr. / Attack / Winter Park, Fla.
Thomas, for the second time this season, is the SSC Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Tars to victories over No. 14 Queens (NC.) and Slippery Rock. Thomas helped the Tars stay perfect on the season with two wins to advance their record to 6-0. Thomas scored two goals as the Tars took down Queens (NC), 12-5. Thomas added one draw control to her night as she fired off five shots and three shots on goal while she was 1-for-1 from the free position mark. Against Slippery Rock, 17-6, Thomas led the game with six goals and fired off 13 shots, nine on goal, went 5-for-9 on free position shots, and added one ground ball and two draw controls to her night. The Winter Park, Florida native led the team on the week in points and goals scored.
Taylor Gillis / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Goal / Bel Air, Md.
Gillis repeats as this week’s SSC Defensive Player of the Week after guiding the Moccasins to victories over Indiana (Pa.) and No. 10 Limestone. Gillis faced 18 shots, saving ten as the Moccasins defeated Indiana (Pa.) 16-8. The Bel Air, Maryland native saw 14 shots and saved six of them as Florida Southern got the 9-8 upset victory over No. 10 Limestone. The Moccasin Junior was between the pipes for all 60 minutes in both games. Florida Southern is 5-2 on the season and will begin SSC play April 2nd.
