SSC Athletes of the Week: April 11 - 17

Weekly Honors in Tennis, Rowing, Lacrosse, Baseball, and Softball

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week | April 11 - 17, 2016
Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of April 11 - 17, 2016. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.

Baseball

6639Dillon McCollough / Eckerd College / Fr. / Pitcher / Deltona, Fla.
McCollough’s is SSC Pitcher of the week following a complete game victory for Eckerd. The Deltona, Florida native went the distance striking out eight, walking one, and giving up just two earned runs on five hits allowed. Eckerd got the victory over Palm Beach Atlantic (3-2). The Tritons’ are 14-17 overall, 2-10 in SSC Play.

6634Laz Rivera / University of Tampa / Jr. / Second Base / Miami, Fla.
Rivera earns SSC Player of the Week honors following a .643 (9-for-14) batting average as Tampa swept Lynn in three games. The Miami native had 20 total bases and had a slugging percentage of 1.429 in the sweep. Rivera drew two walks and was hit by a pitch bringing his on-base percentage to 0.667. His top game of the series came in the finale, where the junior went 5-for-6 with five runs scored, three RBI, two home runs, and a double. Tampa is now 31-6 overall and holds a 13-2 record in SSC play.


Softball

6638Anieliese Palmeiro / Barry University / Fr. / RHP / Doral, Fla.
Palmeiro is this week's SSC Pitcher of the Week after after collecting three consecutive victories in a sweep of Rollins. Miami, Florida native went 3-0 in three appearances last week. Palmeiro pitched seven innings in all three games, including a relief appearance in game two. In the first at Rollins, she allowed one earned run on three walks and two hits in seven innings pitched. The Buccaneer freshman entered game two in relief,  allowing one earned run on four hits. Palmerio walked two and struck out seven in seven innings pitched. In the final game of the series, The Doral, Florida native tossed seven innings giving up four earned runs on nine hits and four walks. With the play of Palmiero, the Buccaneers picked up their first three game sweep of the Tars since 2008. The Buccaneers are now 22-14 overall and 14-7 in SSC play.

6640Kayla Ogle / Barry University / Sr. / Centerfield / Miami, Fla.
Ogle is awarded SSC Player of the Week honors after helping Barry to its first three game sweep of Rollins since 2008. The Buccaneer senior’s top performance came in game one where she went 3-3 from leadoff. Ogle tallied a run scored, a walk, and two stolen bases. In the second game of the series, she went 4-5 from leadoff with a walk, two stolen bases, and two runs scored. Overall the Miami, Florida native went 8-12 at the plate with three runs scored, four stolen bases, and two walks. The Buccaneers are now 22-14 overall and 14-7 in SSC play. 

Women's Rowing

6641Varsity 4 Boat / Rollins College / Winter Park, Fla. 
The Tars Varsity 4 placed fifth at SIRA earning SSC Boat of the Week. In its best race of the year, Rollins’ finished with a time of 8:08.88 against Division I competition. The Tars Varsity 4 is composed of Mattie Scull (Jr.), Isabella Sandoval (Jr.), Morgan Colley (Jr.), Isabella Seddon (Jr.), and coxswain Ana Rivas (So.).

2016 SSC Rowing Award Winners - Week by Week


Tennis

6637Fabian Pronnet / Barry University / So. / Rimsting, Germany
Pronnet is named SSC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after defeating 19th-ranked Pavel Mojha (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) to clinch No. 7 Barry's 5-4 win over No. 9 Lynn. Pronnet's match was the last to finish and, with the score tied at 4-4, it was the clincher. The win marked Pronnet's second victory over a ranked opponent this season. The Rimsting, Germany native improved to 10-3 this year while Barry is now 13-5 overall and 5-1 in SSC play. With the win, Barry secured the No. 2 seed to the SSC tournament.

6633Marine Beugre-Guyot / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Brou sur Chantereine, France
Beugre-Guyot earns SSC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week honors after finishing the week 5-0. The junior went 3-0 in doubles and 2-0 in singles to help the Lions win the Sunshine State Conference regular season championship for the first time. Against Florida Southern, Beugre-Guyot teamed with Pauline Helgesson to win a doubles match, 8-1. At Florida Tech, the duo won 8-6, and she followed it with a 6-1, 6-1, win over Erin Egoroff. In the match to determine the SSC regular season champion, at Nova Southeastern, Beugre-Guyot and Helgesson added an 8-4 win at doubles. Beugre-Guyot then upset No. 28 singles player Petra Jurova, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Saint Leo is now 18-1 overall and 8-0 in SSC play.


Men's Lacrosse

6635Jake Schmidt / University of Tampa / Sr. / Mid / Rochester, N.Y.
Schmidt takes SSC Offensive Player of the Week with a five-point performance against No. 20 Saint Leo last week. The Rochester, New York native scored four times on eight shots including the game winning goal against the Lions. Schmidt also added an assist in the 12-7 Spartan victory. Tampa is now 11-2 overall, 4-0 in SSC Play.

6302Matt Lalli / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Goalkeeper / New Milford, Conn.
Lalli is awarded his third SSC Defensive Player of the Week honor after his performance against No. 20 Lynn. Lalli recorded 17 saves while facing 46 shots for the Moccasins as they upset the Fighting Knights, 11-10, in double overtime. The New Milford, Connecticut native had a save-percentage of 0.630 and added two groundballs in the win. Florida Southern is now 9-7 on the year, 2-2 in SSC play.

6577Christopher Lasprogata / Lynn University / So. / Midfielder / Ardmore, Pa.
Lasprogata is named SSC Specialist of the Week for the second time after a valiant effort against Florida Southern this week. Lasprogata won 13 of 15 faceoffs for a winning percentage of 87% in an 11-10 double overtime loss. The Ardmore, Pennsylvania native picked up eight groundballs in the game. Lynn is now 8-5 overall and 1-3 in SSC play.


Women's Lacrosse
6579Meghan O’Brien / Florida Southern College / So. / Attack / Rochester, N.Y.
For the second time this season O’Brien is  SSC Offensive Player of the Week. In a 16-4 win at Florida Tech, O'Brien scored four goals and had a career high four assists. Her total of eight points is a new career high. It is the fifth time the Rochester, New York native scored multiple times in a game this season. Florida Southern is now 12-3 overall and 2-0 in SSC play.

Abby Coccagna / University of Tampa / Fr. / Defender / Baltimore, Md.
Coccagna is this week’s SSC Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Tampa women's to two victories. Against Ave Maria, Coccagna anchored a Spartan defense that held the Gyrenes scoreless on just three shots in the opening half. The defender notched a ground ball and a caused turnover in the game. The 17-1 win was the lowest opposing score the Spartans have allowed in program history. In another program first, Tampa won its first SSC game with a 8-7 win over Saint Leo. Coccagna scooped up a career-high six ground balls while causing a pair of turnovers. She played a major role in  limiting the Lions' top two scorers, Abbie Ross and Kelsey Burns, to one goal each. Tampa is now 5-9 overall and 1-3 in SSC play.
